Zell am See is a charming lakeside town with a good range of amenities for the non-skier and excellent skiing for all abilities in the Europa Ski Region.
Skiers and boarders have the choice of two ski areas, the Schmittenhöhe mountain lies behind the town and has 80 kilometres of piste, including some excellent terrain for the advanced skier. The Kitzsteinhorn glacier further down the valley past Kaprun, has a great range of runs, particularly for the intermediate and beginner. Boarders will not be disappointed with the terrain on offer and the half-pipe on the Kitzsteinhorn. The area lift pass includes a free bus service between the ski areas.
Zell am See has a many shops, cafes and restaurants. There are a range of activities on offer other than skiing, in the height of winter the lake freezes over and is used for ice-skating and curling. The après-ski is lively, varied and typically Austrian, there are many bars to choose from and several discos. Think beer in giant steins and riotous laughter long into the early hours.
The nearby village of Bruck, at 560m with just one lift, is a quieter and cheaper alternative to Zell am Zee itself, as is Schuttdorf, a peaceful and traditional hamlet situated a short way up the valley from Zell.
