SteamboatChampagne powder abounds in this Colorado resort
Steamboat is located in snow-rich north west Colorado-where skiing has been part of life for over a hundred years. It’s no accident that Steamboat Springs is also officially known as Ski Town USA: 35 of it’s residents have so far taken part in the Winter Olympics.
And you can see how they got off to such a good start- the ski school here is excellent. There are also plenty of greens with good snow for beginners only a short stroll from the town. Intermediates and experts will have the run of all the seven peaks in the Steamboat range (Mount Werner, Sunshine Peak, Storm Peak, Thunderhead Peak, Pioneer Ridge and Christie Peak) and as you would expect from the resort which holds the US trademark on Champagne powder, there is plenty of it here. Skiing in deep powder through trees needs to be tried to be believed and Steamboat is the ideal place to experience it. Some of the chutes on the highest peak, Mount Werner, are very difficult and steep enough to challenge even the most hard-core piste basher.
The town of Steamboat Springs trades on the cowboy image and there is even a cowboy slalom/rodeo competition held annually. The old town is dominated by the main street, Lincoln Ave, and there is plenty of shopping, eating and a whole host of other diversions on offer here. Lincoln is also the main centre for the lively après ski scene.
