Ski Resort Information, Ski Holidays to Portillo
PortilloThe worlds most southerly resort.
Portillo's main ski area, Cerro Castor means ‘hill beaver’ and while the beaver part might not be so obvious (given the general lack of any beavers) the hill certainly is: you feel as if you are on top of the word being this far south.
Beginners are quite well catered for here with decent nursery slopes (El Puma in particular) and a good ski school. Intermediates will also be able to cover most of the terrain here comfortably. Most of the fun, however, is reserved for the experts. The Roca Jack run is so steep it requires it’s own special lift and the Kilometro Lanzado is home to the world speed skiing trails. But it isn’t just the runs experts including Herman Maier and Pecabo Street keep coming back here for- the off-piste is legendary. Champagne powder abounds in Cerro Castor and their motto is very much ‘if you can see it- you can ski it’. The guides will help you find the best off-piste and the season here is June to October.
This is very much a skiing resort and there isn’t much to do off the slopes. The only hotel is quite isolated and sleeps 500 people- it does have a very good restaurant and there have been no reports of anyone being bored off the slopes.
