Ski Resort Information, Ski Holidays to La Thuile

La Thuile

Superb skiing up to 2579m in this undiscovered Italian gem of a resort.

High up in the Aosta valley La Thuile shares a lift pass with linked French resort La Rosiere. Put together the two resorts share a total skiing area of just under 150km.

The best skiing is arguably on the Italian side. The wide, mainly north-facing runs are well groomed and well known for their suitability for cruising and there are very few queues. Beginners will find plenty of easy and uncrowded blues at the first lift station, Les Suches. At the end of the day a gondola trip might be in order because the runs back to La Thuile village at 1400m are difficult reds and blacks. Intermediates will love the long, wide reds. If the Italian side becomes boring halfway through the holiday they can also scoot over to La Rosiere for more challenges. For experts there are some short difficult black runs and some good off piste if one is prepared to invest in a guide.

The resort is very friendly to snowboarders and a high percentage of the lifts are chairs and gondolas and t-bars can be all but avoided. The slopes are on the whole quite wide, ideal for fast riding, and there is usually a high chance of powder.

The village itself is quite small and purpose built, but doesn’t feel as artificial as some of its neighbours. Especially beautiful at night, there are some opportunities for apres ski with plenty of bars but it’s only really very lively at the weekend. The standard of mountain restaurants is, as per usual in Italy, very high.
